The German sophist Jürgen Habermas died on Saturday in Starnberg, Germany, at the age of 96. The German bishops have expressed their deep condolences. Habermas was associated with the second generation of the 'Frankfurt School', which was founded in the 1920s and was heavily influenced by Karl Marx — who, coincidentally, also died on 14 March (1883). Habermas enjoyed a long and applauded career in post-war Europe. For decades, he was presented as one of the foremost proponents of the secular philosophy that came to dominate Western universities. According to Habermas's framework, moral questions such as abortion, sexuality and family values are no longer grounded in objective truth or natural law, but rather can be destructed through public 'democratic' processes. The Catholic Church in Ecuador is mourning the tragic loss of two priests who died after rescuing a young altar server from drowning in the sea. The incident occurred on 13 March at the beach of General Villamil Playas, in the province of Guayas. A group of priests and altar servers had gathered there for a retreat when one of the young boys began to struggle in the water after being caught by strong waves. Father Alfonso Avilés Pérez, parish priest of San Alberto Magno in Daule, immediately entered the sea to help the boy. Father Pedro Anzoátegui also rushed into the water to assist in the rescue. Thanks to their efforts, the altar server was saved. However, the powerful current carried both priests away from the shore. Father Alfonso Avilés died shortly after the incident, while Father Pedro Anzoátegui was initially reported missing. His body was recovered the following day. #newsUsuqmbjccm
The Apostolic Nuncio to Lebanon, Archbishop Paolo Borgia, visited several Christian villages in the southern Lebanese districts of Marjayoun and Hasbaya, near the border with Israel, on March 13.
